Soulslike is an action-RPG subgenre modeled on FromSoftware’s Souls series. It is defined by demanding, timing- and stamina-based combat, bonfire-style checkpoints that respawn enemies, loss of collected resources on death, and storytelling through the environment and items rather than cutscenes.
Did you know? The genre was born in 2009 with Demon’s Souls; Dark Souls (2011) popularized it and gave it its name — the term “soulslike” was coined by players themselves. Today it extends well beyond FromSoftware: Lies of P, Nioh, Black Myth: Wukong, Lords of the Fallen.
